Max and Barnaby

The Max and Barnaby series has been developed to assist parents, educators and therapists to support children with autism or social difficulties. The books are designed to support the development of skills in social interaction and emotional regulation in preschool and primary school aged children.

The stories follow Max and his pet lizard Barnaby as Max tries to navigate social situations in the classroom and playground. Barnaby acts as a sounding board for Max’s worries and provides perspective for Max by helping him understand what others may be thinking and how to explore alternative approaches to social situations.

The topics covered are based on real examples of social difficulties commonly dealt with in clinical practice.  The storybook format further allows for repetition and reinforcement of ideas and skills, and provides an opportunity for discussion and social problem solving. With colourful illustrations, likeable characters and easy to read text, children are engaged and entertained as they learn.
